Increasing incidence of leprosy and transmission from armadillos in Central Florida: A case series

چکیده
NHDP: National Hansen’s Disease Program INTRODUCTION Leprosy, or Hansen’s disease, is caused by the acid-fast bacillus Mycobacterium leprae. Leprosy is transmitted by human-to-human contact, although zoonotic transmission has been described, and contact with the nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) is a risk factor for development of leprosy. Cases 1 and 2 in this case series show zoonotic transmission from armadillos. An additional source of M leprae infection may be soil or land contaminated by leprosy-infected armadillos. Cases 3 and 4 support this potential mode of transmission. Florida recently experienced an increased incidence of leprosy, including 72 confirmed cases since 2010. We report 4 patients seen over 2 years in Central Florida, an area in which leprosy is not endemic.

To the Editor:We read with considerable puzzlement Dr Levis’ critique of our case report conclusion that armadillos infected with Mycobacterium leprae were the likely source of our patients’ Hansen’s disease. We believe that both the clinical and genotypic evidence that the armadillo is an important vector for Hansen’s disease in Florida is quite overwhelming. Dr Levis’ statement that ‘‘It is in...

BACKGROUND Mycobacterium leprae infection has recently been detected in wild armadillos in Brazil. Leprosy is still endemic in Brazil and although its transmission is mostly by person-to-person contact, many cases report no history of previously known leprosy contact. It has been suggested that other sources of M. leprae may contribute to the transmission of leprosy in some areas. AIM Our obj...
متن کاملResearch regarding anti-PGL-I antibodies by ELISA in wild armadillos from Brazil.
Armadillos have been involved in leprosy transmission and are considered a source of Mycobacterium leprae in numerous reports. Clinicians from certain areas of the USA consider contact with armadillos a risk factor for leprosy. However, there is a challenge associated with the role of wild armadillos perpetuating human leprosy in the American Continent. The presence of anti-PGL-I antibodies was...
متن کاملAutochthonous Leprosy without Armadillo Exposure, Eastern United States
Autochthonous leprosy has been reported in New York City, where there are no wild armadillos. Recent autochthonous cases also have been reported in Georgia and Florida and blamed on armadillos, including cases with no known armadillo exposure. International migration needs to be considered as a cause of autochthonous leprosy.
